What beginners say about training with us
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a non-striking martial art which is largely contested on the ground. It encompasses elements of both Judo and Wrestling as a means to takedown or sweep one’s opponent. It applies the principles of kuzushi (off-balancing), angles, timing, pressure and control to achieve the submission of one’s opponent. Submission can occur from joint-locks, strangles or chokes.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is divided into two styles, where rulesets and techniques differ:
- In Gi jiu jitsu, participants make use of the gi (kimono); the fabric can be gripped to apply various techniques including strangles (as in Judo).
- In No-Gi jiu jitsu, gripping the material is not allowed, and there is considerably less friction; as such, No-Gi is often faster-paced, incorporates more Olympic Wrestling-style techniques, and allows more submissions (notably leg-locks) in certain rulesets.
I’m a brand new beginner. What class should I attend first?
If you’re completely new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, we recommend starting with one of the following beginner-friendly sessions for your free trial:
Tuesday – Beginners’ No-Gi (7:15–8:30pm)
Wednesday – Fundamentals Gi (7:30–8:30pm)
Saturday – Women’s Only Gi (10:45–11:45am) (for women)
How does the 6-week beginners’ course work?
Once you sign up to the 6-week beginners’ course, you’ll have access to two beginner-friendly classes per week for six weeks. Shortly after signing up, we’ll get in touch to collect your height and weight so we can provide you with the correct uniform (gi) before your first session.
At the end of the course, most people continue into full membership, where they can keep attending beginners and women’s classes while settling into full training.
Which classes should I attend during the 6-week beginners’ course?
During the 6-week beginners’ course, we recommend attending the same beginner-friendly sessions each week:
Tuesday – Beginners’ No-Gi
Wednesday – Fundamentals Gi
Women are also welcome to attend the Saturday Women’s Only Gi class in addition to these sessions if they’d like extra mat time in a women-only setting.
Our coaches are always happy to help guide you if you’re unsure which sessions are best for you.
