What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a non-striking martial art which is largely contested on the ground. It encompasses elements of both Judo and Wrestling as a means to takedown or sweep one’s opponent. It applies the principles of kuzushi (off-balancing), angles, timing, pressure and control to achieve the submission of one’s opponent. Submission can occur from joint-locks, strangles or chokes. Submissions won’t be taught in the kids’ classes.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is divided into two styles, where rulesets and techniques differ:
- In Gi jiu jitsu, participants make use of the gi (kimono); the fabric can be gripped to apply various techniques including strangles (as in Judo).
- In No-Gi jiu jitsu, gripping the material is not allowed, and there is considerably less friction; as such, No-Gi is often faster-paced, incorporates more Olympic Wrestling-style techniques, and allows more submissions (notably leg-locks) in certain rulesets.
What will I learn in Women only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes?
- We will cover fundamental movements and drills neccessary for the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This will be followed by standing/ground techniques and then positional/normal sparring.
I’m a brand new beginner and want to train in mixed classes. What class should I attend first?
- We recommend coming to one of our beginners’ classes (Tuesday/Wednesday 7.30-8.30pm) as a first session. This class offers a great introduction into BJJ where all 3 coaches will be on-hand to offer assistance. T-shirt and shorts is fine for the first session if you do not own a gi (Wednesday class). Check out our FAQs page for more info.
I have signed up to the women’s only membership but want to train more. Can I train more than once a week?
- Yes you can but you will have to switch to full adult membership/class packs to do so. Women’s membership offers 1 class a week; full membership will give you access to 8 sessions per week.
